ADÃO, FORA DO BALANÇO
My friend and BBC sound engineer supremo
Adam Askew had agreed to come to Poland to
engineer the record. I hadn’t known Adam that
long but we shared a weird history having gone
to the same decadent and violent secondary
school but never having met at the time. One
day, just two weeks before leaving for Warsaw,
I got a text from Adam and as I saw it on the
phone I was struck by Adam’s name meaning
‘a-skew’—an old English word for ‘out of whack’.
In portuguese this means ‘fora do balanço’.

Adam was going through some stuff at the
time and whilst I was out walking in Lisbon
this insistent riff entered my head. I hurriedly
whistled it into my phone so I wouldn’t forget it
and then came home and spent the rest of the
day trying to play and arrange the riff I heard.


The horns were by those master Rio guys, Marlon
Sette on trombone, Diogo Gomes on trumpet
and Alberto’s brother Jorge Continentino
on sax.

An incredible groove was set up and maintained
by Alberto on electric bass and Macio killing it
on drums as usual and with Pedrinho’s rhythmic
Hammond stabs adding to the feel.

The guitar solo on Adão is by Kassin. During the
recording session in Warsaw it blew everyone
away but he was worried it was too heavy
for the concept of the album and insisted on
recording a new jazzier, cleaner solo. Everyone
disagreed and we secretly got Adam to delete
the jazzy take. What remained is just awesome
