about

Bottles 73

Stoned on Pedras

This song with its influences of Gary McFarland and Erasmo Carlos came about when I was stimming at home in my kitchen one day and started tapping on an empty and lidless bottle of Pedras mineral water. The sound was like a tabla. I also had a small one of the same brand and so started playing samba rhythm on them both which led to me running upstairs to my studio and recording just the sound of the bottles. I’ve used these bottles on another track as they really cut through the mix being midrange percussion.

But, as soon as I’d recorded the bottles, I started messing around with the Rhodes and before I knew it I was whistling along. The lap steel is a direct tribute to Rick Ferreira the guitarist who played on Erasmo’s 1973 album ‘Sonhos e Memorias’.

The obvious influence - I was obsessed with Gary McFarland back in the 80s and his ‘vocalese’ and whistling still sound otherworldly and cool today.
